Crunch time for feed the kids bill
Today may be the last chance for former Mana MP Hone Harawira’s feed the kids bill.
The bill has been picked up by Green MP Metiria Turei, who has one five-minute speech left before the first reading vote.
Ms Turei says whether that happens tonight depends on how long the debate goes about the Prime Minister’s expected announcement on what contribution New Zealand will make to the action against ISIS in Iraq.
She says Mana did a great job building a coalition in support of feeding kids at school, but it comes down to one shot.
"If National votes it down then there is no guarantee we will get another bill up, even in the next three years, where we can have a discussion about how we can feed our hungry kids in schools. We've got some programmes in place already, they're doing a good job, but even with the feeding kids it's still not getting to nearly enough children, so we need to have this public and open discussion about what's the best way of doing it," Ms Turei says.
