Tukutuku to adorn United Nations
More than forty tukutuku panels have been taken down from display at Te Papa and packed for shipment to the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell told the closing ceremony that the works in Kahui Raranga: Aotearoa New Zealand’s heart at the United Nations carry the stories of New Zealand’s unique cultural heritage and identity.
The woven panels were commissioned by former minister Pita Sharples to enhance a rimu wall presented to the institution when it opened in 1952.
They were created by sixty weavers from around the country under the guidance of Christine Wirihana.
