Self-belief to Maori future

New Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox wants Maori to believe in themselves.
The list MP was confirmed to replace Tariana Turia at a weekend AGM where the party's relationship with National came under scrutiny.
She says Maori people need to recognise the $3 billion in Maori -specific initiatives the Maori Party has secured through being part of government.
Ms Fox says the Maori Party is the only one advocating self determination and rangatiratanga for Maori, and that will happen independently of National or Labour.
"When I speak to people and I talk to people about this message they say 'you're right' because this message is about self-belief. It is less poverty, yes, but what's bigger amongst our people than poverty of the hand is poverty of the mind and when we change that we change the way we think about ourselves, then we will change our future," she says.
Marama Fox says the Maori Party wants independence, not co-dependence, and it doesn't want a bigger welfare state.
