Maori feature strongly in Art Awards
Maori artists and performers have featured strongly in this year’s Arts Foundation Awards.
Actor Cliff Curtis, choreographer Charles Koroneho and artist Lisa Reihana, along with poet Geoff Cochrane and composer Ross Harris, received $50,000 Laureate awards at a ceremony in Auckland last night.
Reihana says the award affirms the work she has been doing in video and installation, as well as her contributions to various arts bodies.
She says while it’s great to be part of the 2014 crew, she’s also looking back to past winners.
Lisa Reihana says it's great to get an award without having to apply for it or write a report afterwards.
Dancer Louise Potiki Bryant received the Harriet Friedlander New York Residency, valued at $80,000.
Painter Star Gossage received a $25,000 new generation award, as did musician Dudley Benson and Kila Kokonut Krew members Vila Manu-Saute and Anna Pela Polataivao.
There were also patronage awards to Tairawhiti Polytechnic Maori Arts Programe and Tairawhiti Museum.
