Kids in the spotlight at Hastings hui

Children’s Commissioner Dr Russell Wills will keep the spotlight on child poverty at the biennial Maori health conference in Hastings starting today.
The conference, which is hosted by Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated, is for people working in the central region district health board areas.
Other speakers include Kahungunu chair Ngahiwi Tomoana, who will outline initiatives like banning alcohol and tobacco from iwi events, and Tuhoe activist Tame Iti on his own health hikoi.
Organising committee chair Riki Nia Nia says speakers range from health professionals to gardeners, and it's a chance from health workers to hear how traditional Maori practices like mirimiri massage, rongoa and healing waiata can be part of a compehensive health package.
