Boulder Bank declared a wahi tapu

Heritage New Zealand has added Nelson’s Boulder Bank to its list of wahi tapu sites.
The 13-kilometre rocky substrate which separates Tasman Bay from the shallow Nelson Haven was listed last year as an historic area.
National Maori heritage manager Te Kenehi Teira says it’s known to the area’s mana whenua iwi as either Te Taeroa a Kereopa or Te Tahuna a Tama-i-ea, depending which waka they affiliate to.
He told Nelson City Council’s planning and regulatory committee it was an important site to Maori in the mythological, spiritual and traditional senses.
