Wider funding needed for Whanau Ora


One of the prime architects of Whanau Ora says it’s time government agencies outside the social services started contributing.
With original champion Tariana Turia out of parliament and the programme now administered by three non-government commissioning agents, there are fears in some quarters that the model could languish.
Professor Sir Mason Durie says in its initial stages Whanau Ora has been funded out of the health, social development and Maori development budgets.
Sir Mason Durie says it’s important Whanau Ora continue as a way to allow families and communities to make decisions about the services they need in a holistic way.
