Police reo course builds confidence
There are now more police officers who can understand te reo Maori thanks to an Auckland immersion course.
Every year four or five places on the year-long course at Te Wananga Takiura o Nga Kura Kaupapa Maori o Aotearoa are taken up by police officers on sabbatical.
School head Tawhirimatea Williams says they come out being able to comprehend spoken Maori and make themselves understood in te reo.
He says there are other benefits such as a huge boost in self-confidence.
