Crown agencies too controlling

Former Whanau Ora Minister Tariana Turia says Te Puni Kokiri clipped the ticket too hard on the integrated social services delivery model, which is why she was glad to get it out of the ministry’s hands.
Management of the programme has been put in the hands of three independent commissioning agencies, which are now expressing concern at the limited budget they have to operate.
Mrs Turia says the agencies will need to be patient, because it is extremely unlikely they would get extra funding before the budget in the middle of next year.
She says it was a mistake to put government departments in charge.
"Crown agencies are very controlling. They want things done in a particular way. Now that's fine, if that way is able to achieve the results that we want, but in my experience, it is that so often the crown agencies get it wrong " she says.
Tariana Turia says crown agencies focus on the way the money is spend rather than on the outcomes.
