Kapa haka open for investment
Private investors could be brought in to the company which is trying to maximise the value of broadcast rights for major kapa haka events.
Aotearoa Kapa Haka has this year assumed all broadcast and film rights for the next five years, starting with this year’s national secondary schools Maori performing arts competition.
It commissioned executive producer Bailey Mackey to make a series of programmes from the material filmed in Gisborne.
Lawyer Willie Te Aho says that’s a change from the past, when broadcasters saw themselves as doing kapa haka a favour by screening highlights.
He says Te Matatini, which owns all the Aotearoa Kapa Haka shares, wants to distribute them to its 13 regions, the trusts organising the primary and secondary schools national champs.
Mr Te Aho says 25 percent of the shares could be for private investors willing to bankroll future development.
This could include looking for ways to make money off streaming or viewing on internet sites like YouTube.
