Flavell keen to sort Whanau Ora funding
New Whanau Ora Minister Te Ururoa Flavell is refusing to be drawn into an argument about whether Te Puni Kokiri underspent on the integrated social services delivery programme.
Former minister Tariana Turia says because of a lack of cooperation and persistent under-spending she took responsibility for Whanau Ora away from the Maori Development Ministry and gave it to three commissioning agencies.
TPK chief executive Michelle Hippolite says there were times over the past five years when it was inappropriate to commit funding because the future development of Whanau Ora was under review, but any money not spent was added to the next year’s allocation.
Mr Flavell says he has spent the last week being briefed on his new portfolios.
"I want to get a little bit closer to the action before I make any comment and if there have been holes in the past, I would be pretty determined to make sure they are closed up," he says.
