Ringatu head blesses king’s mokopuna
A large group of Ringatu attended the poukai at Waahi Marae in Huntly today to reconfirm the connection between the faith and Kingitanga.
Spokesperson Te Kahautu Maxwell says the connection goes back to the 1870s, when King Tawhiao and Ringatu founder Te Kooti Rikirangi were in exile together under the mantle of Ngati Maniapoto in Te Kuiti.
He says they were invited to the hui by King Tuheitia so they could tuua or bless his grandson Hikairo, the first child of his son Korotangi Paki.
"Being his first mokopuna he decided to re-establish and further confirm this relationship between the Haahi Ringatu and the Kingitanga by giving his mokopuna to the Haahi Ringatu to be blessed by our new head of the faith, the Pou Tikanga, Wirangi Pera," Mr Maxwell says.
