Police honour bicultural visionary

Apirana Mahuika has been honoured by the police for his efforts to develop a partnership between Maori and police.
At the police Maori Focus Forum in Gisborne yesterday, Commissioner Mike Bush presented the Ngati Porou chair with a pounamu carving illustrating a whakatauki Mr Mahuika gave to police in 1996 at the start of the process: E tu ki te kei o te waka, kia pakia koe e nga nagru o te wa – Stand at the stern of the canoe and feel the spray of the future biting at your face.
Mr Bush says the whakatauki was designed to present a vision that by working together Maori offending and victimisation could be reduced, but it would require effort, courage, and leadership.
He says as part of that partnership, the police has based a Maori responsiveness advisor, Whiti Timutimu, within Te Runanga O Ngati Porou.
