New Zealand is putting up te reo Maori action epic The Dead Lands for a best foreign language Oscar.
Film Commission chief executive Dave Gibson says the Toa Fraser-directed film is beautifully shot and deftly told, with an amazing cast of warriors.
He says it’s a strong contender for an Academy Award.
The film won praise at its premiere at this month’s Toronto International Film Festival, and it’s due for release in United States and British cinemas next year.
Distributors have been found in France, Germany, Italy, Benelux, Turkey, China and the Middle East.
The Dead Lands opens in New Zealand on October 30.
