Iwi leaders consult on water

The Freshwater Iwi Leadership Group intends to hold hui around the country to discuss progress and get feedback.
Technical group member Willie Te Aho says they’re keen to hear what Maori think their rights and interests are.
He expects many issues will be similar around the country.
"There will be issues like te mana o te wai, where we say and most of the public would say we’ve got to look after the water sources themselves so we’ve got to ensure our rivers don’t run dry, we’ve got to ensure the quality is up there, those are bottom line issues everyone can agree with. The bigger issues is how do you protect my relationship with my waters," Mr Te Aho says.
He says it’s likely the Iwi Leaders Forum will continue trying to negotiate with government, while the New Zealand Maori Council tries to achieve some of the same things through the courts.
