Te Uri o Hau trialling Marae learning
Te Uri o Hau has teamed up with Unitec to create an outdoor learning centre on one of its Kaipara marae.
Spokesperson Mikaera Miru says it gives the hapu a chance to compete in the market for out of classroom educaiton.
The centre will offer the New Zealand secondary school outdoor curriculum, environmental science, Maori studies, geography, social studies, history and conservation biography.
He says too many young Maori are failing in the education system, and bringing them back to the marae could be the answer for some.
"We have many issues around the fact our schools aren't delivering adequate programmes for Maori. By bringing them back to the traditional learning centre we believe we can whakamana our tamariki, empower them to believe in themselves, and give them some sort of direction through the knowledge of knowing who they are, their tribal history, their tikanga upon the marae. So much of that has been lost," Mr Miru says.
He says the learning centre pilot project could lead to other opportunities for Te Uri o Hau and Unitec to work together.
