Peters shaping up for 2017
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says he's already working towards the next election … whether he is leader or not.
The veteran politician has won his 12th election at the age of 69, and he says experience counted in a campaign where the party had a fraction of the resources enjoyed by its rivals.
He says every day counts in politics.
"I've never thought about what's going to happen in 2017. I'm thinking about what's going to happen now to get ready for it so that whatever and whoever is leading the party in and whatever shape the party is in, which we intend to be as strong as we possibly can and far better resourced now, it starts today," he says.
Winston Peters says New Zealand First has five MPs of Maori descent in a caucus of 11, and they are all there on merit.
