Hawkes Bay Seafoods raided

A raid by fisheries officers on Hawkes Bay Seafoods has alarmed Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated.
Chair Ngahiwi Tomoana says the company, which is owned by the D'Esposito family, is a big employer in the region with many Maori staff.
Compliance officers and police yesterday raided company sites in the greater Hawkes Bay area, Wellington, Tauranga, Gisborne, Chatham Islands and Christchurch.
Dean Baigent, the director of compliance for the Ministry for Primary Industries, says export documents appear to show the company exported more fish than it reported catching.
He says it looks like an example of a company side-stepping regulations aimed at ensuring the sustainability of fisheries,
Mr Tomoana says he hopes the matter is sorted out before the new fishing season at the start of October.
