Waikato War toll recounted

A leading historian is arguing that the toll on Waikato tribes of the war of 1863 and 1864 was greater per capita than that sustained by New Zealand troops in World War One.
Vincent O’Malley makes the case in Beyond the Imperial Frontier: The Contest for Colonial New Zealand, a collection of 13 essays by various writers being launched at Victoria University today by Bridget Williams Books.
Challenging previous assumptions, he says re-analysis of census data indicates the scale of the losses suffered by the Waikato tribes was much greater than previously thought.
Before today’s launch Dr O’Malley will deliver the JD Stout Lecture on The Waikato War: Myth, History and the ‘Art of Forgetting’.
He is working towards a book on the Waikato War to be published next year.
