Turei carries flag for gender
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei is facing the prospect of being the only woman leader of a political party in the new parliament.
The retirement of Tariana Turia means the only other wahine in party leadership ranks will be New Zealand First deputy Tracey Martin, unless the Internet Party's Laila Harre comes in on Hone Harawira's coat tails.
She says that's a turnaround from the time New Zealand had two successive women prime ministers.
" Which to be honest is really scary. We would have thought that by now there would be better gender equity not just among MP's but among the leadership. The Greens have been the only ones that have been really committed to making sure we have women in leadership positions and now of course I'm the only Maori woman, party political leader in as a sitting MP. We need to get more women in, our Marama, Denise Roche. We need to get more women in " she says.
Marama Davidson is at 16 on the Green list, so the party would need to poll over 12 percent for her to become an MP.
