Mental health study wins award
Research into why Maori adolescents are more likely to get mental disorders than their non-Maori counterparts has won Mihiroa Gillies of Ngai Tahu the New Zealand Psychological Society’s Karahipi Tumuaki- President’s Scholarship.
Ms Gillies is studying for a Master of Science qualification at the University of Canterbury.
Her research is examining the role of cultural identity, social disadvantage and childhood adversity in adolescent mental health.
She is using data collected by the University of Otago’s Christchurch Health and Development Study, which is based on 1265 young people aged from 15 to 18.
Society president Kerry Gibson says the topic is relevant and important to Maori and wished her every success in completing her research.
