Reo path for candidate
The Maori Party's Ikaroa Rawhiti candidate says she'd like to see every tamariki Maori learn te reo Maori.
Marama Fox says the party's policy of having te reo Maori available in all schools is a good start.
Her own path to the language came through taking her children to kohanga reo.
"Kohanga reo did not just raise a generation of our babies in te reo Maori, it raised a generation of mothers, also fathers but essentially it was a lot of mothers in kohanga reo who were raised with their children to speak and to open our minds to tikanga as well," she says.
A Maori Television-Reid Research poll released yesterday put Marama Fox on 18 percent support, 3 percent behind Mana's Te Hamua Nikora, with incumbent Meka Whaitiri from Labour leading at 37 percent.
