Youth expo gives hope on jobs
Auckland mayor Len Brown says a speed-dating approach to job searching could be a game changer for many young unemployed.
More than 150 young people attended an event last week at the Zeal youth space in Henderson as part of the mayoral employment traction plan.
Mr Brown says more than the aim was to address youth employment with practical action, exposing young people to employers and giving them tips on preparing cvs and doing well in interviews.
"It was a great day, lots of energy, great connectedness, a lot of positive views expressed by the young people and I think that type of speed dating jobs expo, which is what it turned out to be, is one of the most exciting things that I've seen for a long time in presenting great job opportunities for young Maori to give them real hope," he says.
Len Brown says more than 23,000 young Aucklanders aged between 15 and 24 are not in employment, education or training.
