Waitangi Tribunal member to review fisheries bodies
A committee of iwi representatives has appointed Wellington barrister Tim Castle to review Maori fisheries settlement structures including Te Ohu Kaimoana, Aotearoa Fisheries and the Wai Maori Trust.
The 10-year review was one of the requirements of the Maori Fisheries Act 2004 and must be completed by the end of February 2015.
Mr Castle was an advisor to the Select Committee that considered the Act, and he’d earlier been involved in the establishment of the Quota Management System.
He has acted for Maori on fishing industry and other matters, been a negotiator for treaty settlements and is a member of the Waitangi Tribunal.
Committee chair Mark Ngata says Mr Castle has the right background to carry out the review, which will provide a platform for a discussion among the beneficiaries of the settlement.
