Settlement time for pragmatism
A Te Atiawa negotiator says treaty settlements come down to money … and he's confident the iwi will now have enough to start addressing its development needs.
The iwi signed off its $87 million settlement in New Plymouth on Saturday, despite the presence of some protesters who considered they had been sold short.
Peter Moeahu says the 77 percent vote in favour of the settlement showed the majority are ready to move on after two decades of negotiation and argument.
He says some people see claims as being close to tapu, but there is a time to be pragmatic.
" We are never going to get justice, we all know that. We are never going to recover what we lost, we all know that so the gain for me was to achieve as much transfer of resource as we could possibly get and I believe we have done extremely well " says Peter Moeahu from Te Atiawa
