Labour leader David Cunliffe and fellow MPs have taken time off the campaign trail to attend the tangi of former colleague Dave Hereora, who died on Tuesday.
Mr Cunliffe says the two term list MP has a strong connection with working people through his previous work as a union organiser, and brought that strong connection with Maori workers into the caucus.
He was quietly spoken, reflective and helped bind the team.
Mr Hereora chaired the Maori affairs select committee from 2005 to 2008, and was also the party’s senior Maori vice president.
After losing his place as an MP in 2008 he went to union work.
Dave Hereora’s funeral service is at 11 this morning at Hairini Marae in Tauranga.
