Waka shows rangatahi the way
Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated has formally handed over operational control of its waka to Te Matau a Maui Voyaging Trust.
Trust chair Piripi Smith says the trust was honoured by the agreement, which allows it to continue its work running school programmes as well as generate income by using Te Matau a Maui for tourism and corporate activities.
The trust is attracting rangatahi from around the motu who want to learn about sailing and navigating in the way of the ancestors.
"They’ll come here for a weekend wananga and that's just one of the activities we teach them: tatai whetu, te whanau marama, water safety and sailing aspects as well but some are keen on the navigation side of things," Mr Smith says.
Ngati Kahungunu continues to be involved in the ongoing operation of the Trust through regular reports to the Board.
