Father’s mahi brings tributes

Not every story gets told at the tangi.
Rotorua woman Toni Cummins has compiled a book charting the life an achievements of her father Mitai Rolleston, who died of liver cancer a year ago at the age of 77.
He Kanohi o Kitea o Ngati Whakaue includes essays or interviews from 39 people who had known or worked with the Ngati Whakaue kaumatua, including Paul Tapsell, Scotti Morrison and Cyrus Hinston.
Ms Cummins says the father of five displayed a passion not only for his iwi but for generations to come.
"There was lots of things that I didn't know about how strongly he was involved in education and particularly that he had an incredible love for early child care and he really saw that as one of the most important things that if we got that right down the early years and we got the reo in there and we got our tamariki knowing who they were because very very strong with the Ngati Whakaue coming through down those early years he strongly believed that if we got that right then we were set up for the rest of their lives " says Toni Cummins
