Veteran’s tangi takes priority
One person who won’t be hearing the valedictories is former Maori Party MP Hone Harawira.
The Mana leader says he is proud to have stood with the pair in the early days of the party, and he wished them well in their new-found freedom.
Mr Harawira is in the north attending the tangi of Maori Battalion veteran Solomon Te Whata, who died on Sunday aged 96.
He says Mr Te Whata was a staunch Mana member and a much loved member of the Moerewa community.
"When I think of Sol I think of my granddad, I think of a whole lot of others who went, many of whom didn’t come back," he says.
