Motiti iwi need cash for Rena challenge
The Motiti Rohe Moana Trust is welcoming Waitangi Tribunal recommendation to get help to prepare its objections to a consent that would allow what’s left of the Rena to be left on Otaiti-Astrolabe Reef.
The tribunal’s interim report released on Friday found the reef was a taonga of Maori on the island off Tauranga.
It said the crown failed to undertake meaningful consultation in relation to the resource consent application, and failed to actively protect Maori in the use of their lands and waters, especially their taonga.
Trust chair Umuhuri Matehaere says the resource consent application is 1600 pages long, and the hapu can’t be expected to provide detailed comment without crown assistance.
