Deaf Maori experience on show
An exhibition describing the experience of deaf Maori will go on show in Wellington next week as part of Maori Language Week.
It comes out of a collaborative project between researcher Ann Hynds from Victoria University’s school of education and students from the Kelston Deaf Education Centre in Auckland.
Dr Hynds says with only a handful of trilingual interpreters available, says it has been hard for deaf and hearing impaired Maori to connect with their whakapapa.
In the Ko wai au? Who am I? project, the students used photo, voice and narrative to explore te ao Maori and what it meant to them, their community and future aspirations.
Some of the results will be on display next Wednesday in the Ministry of Education building in Thorndon.
