CTU prosecutes forestry employer

Council of Trade Unions president Helen Kelly has lodged a private prosecution against the employer of Tokoroa forestry worker Charles Finlay.
The safety-conscious father of three died a year ago in the Taumata Forest near Kinleith when a log fell off a truck, releasing a shard which struck him in the head.
In May the District Court granted the CTU leave to file charges against M & A Cross Limited for alleged breaches of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1993.
Ms Kelly says as the matter is before the court she will make no further comment, but she earlier blogged that it wasn’t right that there have only been two prosecutions relating to the 20 agriculture deaths last year.
She said regulator Worksafe’s view seemed to be that the worker was to blame regardless of the inadequacy of the safety systems on a site.
