Clean rivers good for Maori business
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei believes the party’s environment policy can benefit Maori farmers.
The policy released on Sunday calls for a plan to return rivers to a state that people can swim in them.
Ms Turei says Maori landowners are looking for ways to use the whenua more sustainably, and the Greens offer a way that environmental and economic interests can go hand in hand.
"We can position particularly the Maori primary agricultural industries and that part of the Maori economy in a very sustainable place. The fact it’s Maori-owned business makes it a really unique business opportunity globally, both sustainable and culturally sound," she says.
As part of the policy iwi and hapu will be given more say in river and water management.
