Tukutuku uniting old and new
A set of tukutuku panels made for the New Zealand wall at the United Nations Headquarters in New York have gone on display at Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington.
The 50 panels have been woven by 30 weavers from Te Roopu Whatu Raranga o Aotearoa under the leadership of Christina Wirihana.
Arapata Hakiwai, the national museum’s kaihautu, says they are a stunning demonstration of a living art mixing tradition with new concepts.
"You have customary patterns like roimata toroa, poutama niho taniwha but it's also really really good is that you've got new patterns as well to reflect the unique setting so you've got the silver fern the ANZAC poppy the kiwi and patterns there called te ao hurihuri and matariki," Mr Hakiwai says.
Kahui Raranga The Art of Tukutuku: Aotearoa New Zealand’s Heart at the United Nations is at Te Papa Tongarewa until November 1.
