Providers walking alongside whanau

The manager of a Wairarapa Whanau Ora collective says a lot of the challenge is getting back to older ways of doing things.
Carl Hutchby says whanau ora is giving Maori organisations the opportunity to develop programmes that Maori are comfortable with.
That can be at odds with what government agencies have been demanding, but it’s about doing what works.
" They get whanau back on track, they are empowered they make the decisions I think that's the key to this is putting the whanau at the centre of whatever it is that we do and they make the decisions and we walk beside them " she says.
Carl Hutchby says as a result of whanau ora one of the district health boards is now giving his organisation a collective budget rather than giving separate sums for specific outcomes.
