Young teachers quitting Maori medium
Massey University’s Centre for Educational Development has been given $2.3 million to find ways Maori medium schools can hang on to their teachers.
Project leader Heneriata Milner says 70 per cent of new teachers in Maori medium schools leave their position within three years compared with 30 per cent of new teachers in English language schools.
Likely causes include a lack of pedagogical support and a lack of trained mentors.
Researchers will look at ways to grow mentoring capabilities within communities, iwi and schools, and ways to improve the transition from in-service training to the first two years off teaching.
