Rangatiratanga tips from hui

A Bay of Plenty regional councillor hopes a council-backed hui inspires participants to think of practical ways to develop their own rangatiratanga.
The biennial Te Ahurangi – Rangatiratanga in Practice conference at Waiariki Institute of Technology will showcase Maori capacity and knowledge.
Awanuiarangi Black says speakers including Patrick McGarvey, Jack Thatcher and Moana Maniapoto can share practical experience.
"They’re coming from different angles but these are all about taking our contemporary situatiion and our futures into our own handfs, and it's really there for those who wouldn't usually be able to afford to attend conferences, which tend to cost a fair few dollars," he says.
Mr Black says the conference includes workshop sessions on leadership and water policy, as well as ways Maori can contribute to regional decision-making.
