Whangarei Council abandons Hundertwasser plan

The dream of a dedicated Maori art gallery in Tai Tokerau is now ashes after the Whangarei District Council voted to remove the proposed Hundertwasser Art Museum from its long term plan.
As a conditions of creating a museum dedicated to the work of the Austrian-born artist who made Northland his second home for 30 years, his estate stipulated the complex include a gallery for Maori and indigenous art.
The proposal has been controversial in the town, with a telephone survey carried out by the council finding 53 percent of residents opposed.
The money raised to convert the old Northland Harbour Board Building at the Town Basin will now be returned.
