The Crown Forestry Rental Trust has agreed to fund hearings of Te Paparahi o Te Raki claims while also funding Ngapuhi settlement negotiations.
In a letter to claimants trust chair Angela Foulkes says that’s a departure from the tribunal’s policy of the past decade not to fund the Waitangi Tribunal process and direct negotiations at the same time.
But she says trustees have acknowledged that Te Tai Tokerau presents a number of unique circumstances.
Uncertainty over funding has driven some of the hostility among claimants to Tuhoronuku, the body set up by the Ngapuhi Runanga to negotiate the claims.
The issue has also created division in the trust.
