Tribe tackles insurance shortfall
Waikato-Tainui has negotiated a comprehensive insurance package it’s offering free to its constituent marae.
Te Arataura chair Rahui Papa says the tribal executive wants to make sure marae are safeguarded for future generations.
He says the tribal executive was aware many marae were concerned about the cost of insurance and the fact many policies did not offer full replacement.
"Other insurance companies that we've been talking to viewed things like whakairo as the replacement value is just a 4×2 plank of wood. We're saying 'kao' this is a tinotaonga and really to replace whakairo you need mastercarvers to replace all of the whakairo that have been damaged. And so this is one of the things that we've been discussing with various companies and we think we've come up with a pretty good scheme," he says.
The package will cover damage to marae buildings and contents, loss or damage to taonga or items of cultural significance, lost revenue due to interruption of commercial activities, public liability for damages to a third party or personal injury, and statutory liability.
Mr Papa says the iwi is also looking into the feasibility of tangihanga and medical insurance.
