Candidate celebrates family links
Candidate celebrates family links
The Maori Party’s Te Tai Tokerau candidate is hoping family connections can win his a few votes in September’s elections.
And not stepfather, Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples.
Te Hira Paenga was in the north today to emphasise his whakapapa into the area.
He says despite 31 years as a born and bred west Aucklander, he’s proud of his mother’s links to Ngapuhi, Ngati Hine and Ngati Kahu.
" It’s also to link in with particularly the whanau from Kaikohe. Grandmother having strong links and also grandfather growing up and establising himself born and bred out of Waima, Hokianga and coming down to Ngwha and Ngati Rangi. So the first port of call is to let everybody know my bones are up there and to possibly reawaken those links and that whakapapa" he says.
Te Hira Paenga says a lot of his message is about getting rangatahi to build ion the contributions of those of his parents generation to hold on to the culture and language.
