Children must come first
Mana leader Hone Harawira says a campaign to get people to think about children when they go to vote is right at home with Mana’s philosophies.
The Tick for Kids campaign is backed by Unicef, Mana Ririki, the Child Poverty Action Group, Plunket and other organisations.
Mr Harawira says when he first floated his Feed the Kids Bill there was a lot of resistance, but people have become a lot more aware of the impact of politics on children.
He says it’s a message people can understand and get behind.
" I want our primary focus to be on ensuring the next generation are going to grow up and be healthy and positive contributors to our society rather than sick and unhealthy and disconnected members of our society. So the tick the kids thing is exactly in line with that philosophy. Ko nga tamariki te tuatahi – children are first in our minds", he says.
