McIntosh to steer Nga Pae through transition
A new director has been appointed to steer the centre for Maori research excellence, Nga Pae o te Maramatanga, through its final 18 months.
Tracey McIntosh of Ngai Tuhoe was joint director of the centre between 2007 and 2009, before becoming the head of Auckland University’s sociology department.
She came back in April as acting director after the resignation of Charles Royal.
The centre lost its funding after 2015 in the Tertiary Education Commission process for funding centres of research excellence, but the Government included extra money in the budget for four centres that had missed out.
Associate Professor McIntosh says that announcement means the role is crucial as Maori academics map out what such a centre will look like.
Her recent research focuses on incarceration (particularly of indigenous peoples), inequality, poverty and justice, where she has published extensively and is frequently called upon to present her work internationally and nationally.
