Te Mana o Rangithi to seek Mandate
Te Mana o Ngati Rangitihi Trust is ready to ask the Crown to accept its mandate to negotiate a settlement of the Bay of Plenty iwi’s historic claims.
Te Mana was set up to represent the iwi’s interest in the Central North Island forestry settlement, but over the past year has sought to widen its mandate.
Chair Graham Pryor says a vote conducted by Electionz registered 77 percent approval for the iwi to enter direct negotiations with the Crown.
Almost 30 percent of eligible voters took part in the mandating process.
That’s the same turnout as Te Mana’s trustee elections in 2012.
Te Mana will now ask Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson for formal recognition.
