Parenting toolbox developed for Maori
Maori parents have a new toolbox to help them learn some of the skills they need to cope with their tamariki.
Entertainer Pio Terei, who has been presenting parenting workshops to Maori audiences for more than a decade, says the Building Awesome Whanau Toolbox is something community, marae or church groups can pick up and apply themselves, without having to bring in outside facilitators.
The six-session course developed in partnership with The Parenting Place includes proven, research based material.
There’s less reading and more discussion that other Toolbox courses, and a lot of the information is delivered in video presentations by Terei and other like Stacey Morrison, Henare O’Keefe and Tina Cross.
He says sometime people just need a reminder.
"You know our culture is about warmth, our culture is about manaaki whanau, manaaki tamariki, and we've sometimes just got to relearn the stuff that's fallen through the cracks the last few generations," Terei says.
