Kahungunu keen to settle
Ngati Kahungunu are set to become major players in the economy of the Hawkes Bay with the signing of two agreements in principle totaling $200 million.
The sum is evenly split between the Heretaunga-Tamatea cluster of hapu from south of Napier to Takapau, and Te Tira Whakaemi o Te Wairoa covering northern Hawkes Bay hapu.
Te Tira Whakaemi chair Tamati Olsen says the signing locks in the $100 million quantum, and they will aim to resolve outstanding issues and signed a deed of settlement in July next year.
"Our people are very supportive. They want us to get on and finish the job. That’s the overwhelming feeling I am getting from our people all around the country, back home, people want to move on, they want to get into development mode," Mr Olsen says.
Yesterdays signings followed settlements with Mohaka-based Ngati Pahauwera and Tangoio-based Maungaharuru, and agreement with Napier-based Mana Ahuriri.
Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa is still negotiating.
