Kohanga Reo expose cleared by broadcast watchdog

The Broadcasting Standards Authority has declined to uphold a complaint against a Maori Television expose of problems in Te Kohanga Reo National Trust.
It also knocked back a complaint about a story on the discovery of koiwi or ancient bones at the development site of Devonport’s Masonic Tavern in Auckland.
A Question of Trust, the special Native Affairs investigation on Kohanga Reo, examined concerns from kohanga reo whanau members about the personal loans made to board and trust staff, as well as governance issues such as life term memberships for board members.
Julian Wilcox, the channel’s general manager of news and current affairs, says BSA decisions confirm that Native Affairs followed a fair, robust and thorough process in this investigation.
He says public organisations funded by the public, for the purpose of serving the public, have to be subject to public scrutiny.
Maori Television’s news and current affairs team will continue to ensure that Maori get the same level of scrutiny and accountability.
