Extra places for Maori medium teachers
More graduates are to be given the chance to switch into a teaching career in the Maori medium and early childhood sectors.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says from next year an extra 150 fulltime equivalent places will be created for postgraduate-level initial teacher education qualifications.
She says it’s part of a broader programme to raise the status of the teaching profession.
The training will include a strong practice component with extended placements in schools or kura and early childhood services.
The postgraduate Maori-medium initial teacher education programmes in primary and secondary schooling will have an in depth focus on matauranga Maori and kaupapa Maori, and on teaching second languages.
The Education Ministry will release tenders next month to determine who will run the new courses.
