Maori get Queen’s Birthday honours

The first judge of Maori descent appointed to the High Court, Justice Lowell Goddard, has been made a dame in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
Dame Lowell was also one of the first NZ women to be appointed a queens counsel, and she's a former chair of the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
New companions of the New Zealand Order on Merit include the head of Elam art school, Professor Jonathon Mane-Wheoke, Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi head Professor Graham Hingangaroa Smith, and Maori language champion Huirangi Wakarepuru.
Riki Herengitana-Cherrington was made a member of the order for his role in establishing Murihiku Marae in Southland.
ONZMs also went to Muriwhenua leaders Rangitane Marsden from Ngati Takoto and Haami Piripi from Te Rarawa.
