Pathways for children back to whanau

There could be changes afoot for children of Ngati Kahungunu descent who are in state care.
The Wairoa to Wairarapa iwi is signing a memorandum with Child Youth and Family tomorrow setting out a commitment to work together.
Jenny Smith from Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Inc's Te Ara Toiora social services arm says one of the iwi’s aim is to develop pathways so that children in care can come home to their extended whanau from wherever they are.
"There's two pathways. One is the pathway of our rangatahi and tamariki coming back to our whanau. The other is about preparing aour whanau as we do for any homecoming, enabling them to successfully join with their families," she says.
Jenny Smith says Ngati Kahungunu wants to work with CYFS to change its approach from dealing the children as individuals to working with them within the wider whanau context.
